MOTION PICTURE
Solo show
Curator: Marina Bobyleva
Triumph Gallery, Moscow, 2023
The exhibition showcased a series of works which merge scenes from real life with images from well-known films. The exposition featured large-scale paintings and polyptychs arranged in an abstract narrative about human memory. Through the use of fractional, multi-phased portraits, the artist appears to be storyboarding the subtle movements or expressions of the person depicted, constantly rewinding and fast-forwarding through their story to capture a moment that reveals something hidden in the in-between.
While working in a traditional medium, Katya Shcheglova pays great attention to the impact of modern digital technologies and media on human perception. This exhibition blends personal memories with the abundant imagery of mass culture. The real and the imaginary balance out over time in the human mind, turning experience into a collection of moving, ever-changing images to which we can return to reflect on our past or find answers to questions that trouble us in the present.
