KATYA SCHEGLOVA

Visual artist, contemporary painting, large-scale portraits. Cinema and theater art director and production designer. Born 1983, Moscow. Based in Berlin.

Katya Scheglova's approach to painting is phenomenological and anthropological. She aims to capture elusive and complex emotions through the portraits of people. Her works shift fluidly between representation and abstraction, at once both realistic and inventive. Drawing on the images of classical figurative paintings and deeply influenced by the School of London group, Katya incorporates to her projects signs of contemporary visual culture, combining recreations of photographs with imagined elements. She frequently employs the distortions and anomalies inherent in digital images, creating layered and glitchy works with vibrant and sometimes unnatural colors. This allows her to concentrate on the evolving human perception of reality, shaped by countless technological and social filters. With more than 400 portraits that she already did, Katya depicts a diverse and lively world, enriched by many optics, where family and community values are emphasized as crucial means to attain peace and unity.

Katya Scheglova did a number of personal and group exhibitions, among which are the long-time project Kids Of the World, projects Siblings and Mirrored Heart, exhibited several times in Russia. Also she took the Residency at Mana Contemporary Foundation in New Jersey (2016). Dr.Robot Gallery represented the artist's work at the Art Madrid Art Fair (2022).

As a production designer for cinema, Katya collaborated with directors such as Kirill Serebrennikov, Roman Volobuev, Alisa Khazanova, and Yuri Muravicky. She served as art director for Serebrennikov's feature film The Student, which was critically acclaimed at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival (Un Certain Regard). Katya was nominated for the 2019 Golden Mask Award for Best Theater Art Director for her work on the HANANA play.
